Gender
For many types of genetic interpretation it is important to know whether the genetic data is from a female or male. An app may also require this information in-order to process the file correctly.
Any file in your My Data page, including files that have been shared with you, can be labeled as being either from a male or a female. To label the gender for a file, following these three steps:
- Navigate to the My Files tab by clicking on Data in header of any page.
- Under the Options column for the file, click on the gear icon:
- Select Gender and/or Population.
For some file types, the My Data page will automatically label the file as being from a male or a female. This is accomplished by determining whether the file’s genetic data contains a Y chromosome (male) or two X chromosomes (female).*
*Determining whether a file is from a male or female does not currently analyze for other possibilities, such as XXY. If there is a Y chromosome then the automated process will label the file as being from a male. If there are at least two X chromosomes and no Y then the file will be labeled as being from a female.
