By Dr. Brandon Colby MD, a physician and expert in genetic testing, advanced DNA analysis, and personalized medicine.
Our DNA connects us to different parts of the world. Cultures, regions, and histories are woven into our cells across generations. Living DNA is one service that helps people explore that ancestry, and it also offers health and wellbeing insights based on your genetic data. It provides testing, analysis, and free upload options, so you can get a broad view of yourself down to the genetic level.
About Living DNA ancestry

Living DNA's ancestry analysis goes beyond a surface view. It breaks your ancestry down into regions and subregions, covering both recent and more distant generations. It also includes a DNA matching tool that connects you with people who share DNA markers, which can help you find distant relatives.
Living DNA also offers a Wellbeing option for people who want more than ancestry. It looks at genetic markers related to health, with guidance on areas like adjusting your eating to match your metabolism, identifying vitamins your body may need, finding exercise that suits you, and recovering well after a workout.
Using Living DNA upload
If you have already tested with another company, Living DNA lets you upload your existing DNA data to its site for free, so you can use its ancestry and wellbeing tools without buying and waiting for another test. Living DNA accepts uploads from several major providers, including 23andMe, MyHeritage, AncestryDNA, and FamilyTreeDNA (Family Finder), as well as standard data files. Because the list of supported sources changes over time, check the Living DNA site for the current set before you start. The free upload provides ancestry data across continental regions, along with DNA matching.
Living DNA upload instructions
First, download your data from the company where you tested:
- Log in to the account where you took your test, such as 23andMe, MyHeritage, or AncestryDNA.
- Go to your account and open your test results.
- Find the option to download your raw DNA data.
- Save the file to your computer. It usually downloads as a zip file.
Second, upload to Living DNA:
- If you do not have a Living DNA account, create one and log in.
- Select the person you are uploading for. Other living adults need to approve their own upload and can create an account to do so.
- Read and agree to Living DNA's terms of service. If you do not agree, you do not need to proceed.
- Enter the required information for each person, which includes name, country of birth, date of birth, and sex.
- Use the upload button next to the file option, then locate the file you saved.
- Select the DNA file and confirm.
- Allow time for the file to process. You will get confirmation once the upload succeeds.
Results take a little time. Ancestry results may appear within a few hours, while DNA matching can take up to a few days.

Living DNA is not the only service that accepts free uploads from other companies. Sequencing does too.
About Sequencing DNA data uploads

Sequencing also lets you upload your DNA data for free, and it is a good way to learn more about your genetics. Once your file is uploaded, you can run any app in the Partner Marketplace on it. Choose a free or paid analysis app, start it, and in a few minutes you will have a personalized report based on your data.
Getting your data in is straightforward. Go to the Upload Center, select your raw DNA file from your computer, and upload it. Your data works with apps across categories including health, ancestry, and nutrition, so you can analyze the file you already have in many different ways.
For the most complete analysis, Sequencing also offers clinical grade whole genome sequencing, which reads 100% of your genome and all of your over 30,000 genes, far more than a genotyping test reads.
Additional guidance is available in our guide on how to upload raw DNA data to Sequencing.
