Using Raw DNA Data at Sequencing.com

Last week we discussed what is DNA raw data analysis. This week we are expanding on the topic by sharing with you more specific steps for how you can accomplish easy, quick and empowering data analysis.

If you are unsure what raw DNA data analysis is, please first read the previous article. For those of you who are familiar with the concept, Sequencing.com offers two solutions to help you with the process. The first option is to download your data from your genetic testing provider and upload it to Sequencing.com. The second option is to you one of our quick importers. In the following article, we will touch on both and provide links to our help documentation.

Automatically Import Your Raw DNA Data

If you have taken a consumer genetic test from a provider such as AncestryDNA, 23andMe, Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), MyHeritage, and even Living DNA, you are able to obtain your raw DNA data.

We provide a convenient way to automatically import your raw DNA data from many of these companies directly into your Sequencing.com account. To use our automatic DNA data importer, go to the Upload Center and click the button of the company that performed your DNA test. Enter your credentials to access that company's site and we'll do the rest.

We designed the automatic import of raw DNA data to be safe, secure, and confidential. Your credentials for the company that performed your DNA test are never used for any other purpose other than importing a copy of your data. The automatic import process immediately (and permanently) deletes your credentials after a copy of your DNA data is safely imported in your Sequencing.com account.

Download & Upload Your Raw DNA Data

An alternative to automatically importing is to instead manually obtain your DNA data from the company that performed your DNA test. The manual steps to do this vary with each company, but the process is similar.  It involves visiting the website of the company that provided the test, finding the file to download, saving it to your computer, and uploading it to Sequencing.com.

Since the steps vary for each company, we have documented the process for each site in our Knowledge Center under the Genetic Testing Providers section. Within this section, you will find instructions for the consumer testing companies mentioned above. The same basic process applies if you used a clinical laboratory as your testing provider such as LabCorp, Quest, Veritas, Ambry or GeneDx.

While it is easy to obain your raw genetic data from most companies, if you encounter any resistance please remember from our last discussion that all companies and laboratoris in the USA are required by Federal law to provide you with your genetic data.

Once you have the file, you can securely upload it to your Sequencing.com account by following the steps in the Uploading section of the Knowledge Center.

To upload the data, you can upload it directly from your computer if the file is less than 200 MB. If the file is larger than 200 MB, you can import the file from a cloud or use Big Yotta, which is an easy-to-use uploader that can upload files up to 100 GB directly into your Sequencing.com account. Big Yotta is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux.
