Sequencing is a health genomics platform. Your DNA carries information across 100% of your DNA and all of your over 30,000 genes, and most people use Sequencing to focus on health related insights. Ancestry and heritage are a separate, optional area you can explore through third party apps in the Partner Marketplace.
If you are curious about where your family came from, genetic genealogy apps can help. This article explains how genetic ancestry analysis works and which ancestry apps are currently available.
How genetic ancestry analysis works
Most ancestry results are produced through admixture analysis. Admixture analysis is a biogeographical method used to infer geographical origins based on genetic ancestry. It compares single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in your DNA against one or more reference populations, and your results reflect how similar your DNA is to those reference groups.
One limitation is worth understanding up front. The accuracy of any ancestry estimate depends on the reference populations a given app uses. Different apps draw on different reference data, so results can vary between them. This is one reason the Partner Marketplace offers more than one ancestry app, so you can choose the approach that fits what you want to learn.
Ancestry and genealogy apps in the Partner Marketplace
To use any of these apps, first upload your DNA data through the Upload Center, then open the Partner Marketplace and select an app. Each app is developed by a partner and runs an analysis on your uploaded data. Some apps are free and others are a one time purchase. Current pricing is shown on each app listing in the Partner Marketplace.
Ancestry apps currently available include:
- World Ancestry Report (developed by Galatea Bio). An ancestry breakdown that estimates your geographical origins across global populations.
- Ancestry Explorer (developed by SelfDecode). An ancestry analysis covering your broad regional origins.
- Genetic Ancestry with Haplogroups (developed by Complete Genome Science). Ancestry results that include your haplogroups, which trace deep ancestral lineages.
- Mitochondrial Ancestry (developed by SelfDecode). An analysis of your mitochondrial DNA, which is passed down the maternal line and traces your direct maternal ancestry.
- Map My Genes and Map My Genes Archaeology Edition (developed by Genealogy Researchers). Ancestry apps that place your genetic origins in a broader population and historical context.
The Partner Marketplace also includes lighter, novelty apps that use the same DNA data in a more playful way:
- Santa and Me (developed by Sequencing, free). A seasonal app that compares your DNA to St. Nick.
- Am I An Einstein? (developed by Complete Genome Science, free). A novelty app that reads your DNA for a bit of fun.
Your DNA data and privacy
When you run a Partner Marketplace app, your data is processed to generate your results, and you can review those results by signing into your Sequencing account from any computer, tablet, or phone. Sequencing's approach to data ownership and privacy is described on the Privacy Forever page.
Get started
Upload your DNA data through the Upload Center, then browse the Partner Marketplace to choose an ancestry app. If you do not yet have DNA data to upload, you can learn about whole genome sequencing, which reads 100% of your DNA, on the Whole Genome Sequencing page.
